PRESTONSBURG — Highlands Regional Medical Center’s information technology department was recently ranked fourth in “Where to Work: Best Hospital IT Departments” in the medium hospital category (101 to 350 licensed beds), by Healthcare IT News.
Highlands’ IT department is an eight-person team that manages the information systems of the hospital, plus its four clinics, two retail pharmacies, a wellness center, home health agency and seven physician practices. Highlands Health System’s IT department may have only eight employees, but whatever the job, they’re up to the task, partially because “Everyone here loves technology,” said Chief Information Officer (CIO), J.D. Jackson.
Highlands IT department assisted in the deployment and implementation of an electronic medical record system, one of the first in the region. Physicians enter orders and medical documentation directly into a computer that can be accessed at different locations around the world. Highlands now has the ability for enhanced clinical support – allowing providers access to additional health, medical, pharmaceutical information to improve safety, efficiency, and quality of care.
J.D. Jackson, CIO, states, “All employees take personal ownership for their department, their network and their servers. This award could not be possible without our hospital providing good equipment, a reasonable wage and good training.”
