A Floyd County native will begin serving his country soon after recently joining the U.S. Marine Corps Delayed Entry Program.
Lowell T. Samons III, a 2007 Betsy Layne High School graduate will attend the Marine Corps Recruit Training in Parris Island South Carolina.
Samons will undergo 13 weeks of training which will include: first aid instruction, general military subjects, physical fitness, Marine Corps history and weapons familiarization.
Upon successful completion of recruit training Samons will return home for ten days of recruit leave before shipping off to attend one of 300 formal military occupational schools. He will also be given over $100,000 in college tuition for his service to his country.
