A new program is set to begin with an emphasis on putting out of work miners back to work in Eastern Kentucky.
The Eastern Kentucky Concentrated Employment Program, Inc. will be soon launching its new “Hiring Our Miners Everyday” program.
The program will offer expert career advising and job search assistance what re always available to job seekers. It plans to also allow EKCEP, Kentucky Career Center Job Sight Network, and key state and community action partners to place eligible coal miners who have lost their mining jobs in 2012 into new skilled jobs of training opportunities which may lead to new jobs.
The program will additionally provide the same benefits to spouses of the laid-off miners.
HOME is a result of a two-year National Emergency Grant, applied for by EKCEP from the U.S Department of Labors which will temporarily expand the service capacity of the Workforce Investment Act’s dislocated worker training and employment program to EKCEP’s 23- county service region.
• Opportunities that will be available to miners and their spouses include:
• On-the-job training
• Classroom training
• Skilled apprenticeships
• Other services
The HOME program will require help from local elected officials, workforce partners, and others to identify and recruit employers who are willing to hire dislocated miners and spouses into skilled jobs that will utilize miners safety consciousness, teamwork experience, dependability, and strong work ethic.
The bulk of on-the-job training wages will be covered by the HOME program, which will allow participants to earn while learning and employers to train those new hires at minimal cost.
