BETSY LAYNE - Host Betsy Layne pulled away from Belfry in overtime on Saturday night, defeating the Pirates 63-56 in an early-regular-season contest at the Dome.
After regulation ended with the two teams tied 52-52, Betsy Layne controlled the extra period, outscoring the Pirates 11-4 to post the win.
Belfry came up empty on multiple possessions while Betsy Layne converted on its end during the overtime frame.
Betsy Layne claimed its second straight win, prevailing for the fifth time in six outings. With the win, Betsy Layne moved to 7-2.
Following a lopsided win over Riverside Christian earlier in the week, Belfry slipped back into the loss column. The Pirates dropped to 3-2.
The battle between two 2012 15th Region semifinalists featured numerous highlights for both teams.
Junior guard Dylan Meade paced Betsy Layne with a game-high 25 points. Meade was one of only two Betsy Layne scorers to reach double figures. Sophomore guard/forward Peyton Case chipped in 14 points for the Bobcats,.
In all, eight different Betsy Layne players scoring in the non-district win.
Senior guard Garran Newsome scored seven points while sophomore forward/center Lako Daniels and junior forward/center Dylan Hamilton added five apiece for the Bobcats.
Betsy Layne was nearly automatic at the free throw line, finishing seven-for-eight from the charity stripe.
Belfry faced an eight-point deficit in the first half but managed to battle back to get near-even with the Betsy Layne prior to intermission. Only one point separated the two teams on numerous occasions.
Betsy Layne outscored Belfry 17-12 in the opening quarter and led 36-28 at halftime.
Belfry, under the direction of veteran head coach Randy Casey, owned the third quarter, outscoring Betsy Layne 17-9 to tie the game 45-45. After being held to seven points in the final quarter, the Bobcats thrived offensively in overtime.
Dustin Rogers had three points and Blake Rose and Wynston Akers added two apiece for the Bobcats.
Senior center/forward Tony Messer led Belfry with a team-best 21 points. Messer carried a 24 points per game scoring average into the 15th Region matchup. Messer was one of three Belfry scorers to reach double figures. A pair of senior guards aided the Belfry offensive attack. Brett Charles scored 14 points and Josh Robinson netted 12 for the Pirates.
A fourth Belfry scorer narrowly missed double figures with Sean Hurley, another senior guard, scored nine points for Belfry in the setback.
