PRESTONSBURG — The Prestonsburg Lady Blackcats are looking to regain some momentum after a second-place finish in a holiday tournament in late-December. Prestonsburg, under the guidance of first-year head coach April Newsome, notched its first win in the 2012-13 season and eventually claimed a second victory en route to a runner-up finish in its own tournament late last month.
The Lady Blackcats finished runner-up to Leslie County in the Prestonsburg Christmas Tournament.
Bracket 1 in the Prestonsburg-hosted holiday tournament was comprised of East Ridge, Leslie County, South Floyd and Menifee County.
Bracket 2 in the Prestonsburg tournament was made up of host Prestonsburg, Phelps, Wolfe County and Morgan County.
Prestonsburg defeated Phelps 52-37 in the opening round of the tournament.
Freshman Tiffany Meadows paced Prestonsburg with a game-high 25 points. Seventh-grader Jana Jarvis followed with a double-double that included 15 points and 11 assists.
Allison Hall joined Meadows and Jarvis in double figures, finishing with 11 points.
Following the impressive opening round win over 15th Region rival Phelps, Prestonsburg pulled off an upset victory over Morgan County in the second round of the holiday tournament.
Prestonbsurg pulled away to beat Morgan County 46-39.
Meadows led Prestonsburg with 19 points. She was also named the Q95 Player of the Game.
Hall scored 11 points and Jarvis chipped in eight for the Lady Blackcats.
The Lady Blackcats compiled a 2-1 record in their tournament. Leslie County defeated Prestonsburg 87-33 in the title game.
Jarvis led Prestonsburg with 11 points in the championship game.
Meadows, Jarvis and Hall represented Prestonsburg on the all-tournament team.
