MARTIN - The Piarist School girls’ basketball team claimed an historic victory on Monday, defeating South Floyd 63-19 for its first 58th District/Floyd County Conference win in school history.
Piarist improved to 4-8 and 1-3 in the 58th District/Floyd County Conference after posting the win.
South Floyd slipped to 0-14 and 0-3 in the district/conference following the loss.
With the win, Piarist halted a three-game losing streak.
Kelli Akers, a senior guard, led Piarist with a game-high 20 points, outscoring South Floyd herself. Akers was one of three Piarist scorers to reach double figures. Piarist’s two other two scorers in double figures registered double-doubles. Shelby Lemaster scored 15 points and pulled down 10 rebounds for the Lady Knights. Jessi Hale followed, scoring 10 points and grabbing a game-high 14 rebounds in her team’s monumental triumph.
Piarist, under the direction of veteran head coach Kevin Tackett, received scoring from six different players. Cathryn Calhoun and Lauren Wright added eight points apiece for the Lady Knights.
Rounding out the Piarist scoring, Christi Rose chipped in two points.
The Lady Knights are scheduled to visit South Floyd on Feb. 4.
Piarist will return to action in the 58th District/Floyd County Conference on Friday night when it hosts Allen Central as part of a girls-boys basketball doubleheader. Tip-off for the Piarist-Allen Central girls’ basketball game is set for 6 p.m.
