PRESTONSBURG — A new sporting goods store will soon be opening in the city, and the location might surprise those familiar with the Prestonsburg Village Shopping Center.
Hibbett Sports will be opening a store between Walmart and Save-A-Lot.
“What most people don’t realize is that Save-A-Lot didn’t take the whole building when the moved in there (the old Winn-Dixie building),” said Prestonsburg Fire Chief Bobby Carpenter. “There’s actually 8,000 square feet between the two that Save-A-Lot didn’t take, and that’s where Hibbett Sports is going to be.”
The company has already filed blueprints with the city and has obtained a demolition permit “for what little bit of demolition they have to do,” Carpenter said. The company is still waiting for state approval on its building permit.
No timeline for the new store’s opening was available. Officials with the company’s Birmingham, Ala., headquarters could not be reached for comment.
Hibbett Sports operates over 800 sporting goods stores in 26 states, selling shoes, athletic apparel and sporting equipment. The company has reported 12 consecutive quarters of earnings increases, with comparable store sales up 6.4 percent during the company’s third quarter.
