Four local middle school students will be heading to Louisville next month, to take part in the state Governor’s Cup academic competition.
Zach Caldwell, of Adams Middle School, placed first in composition, during a regional middle school competition over the weekend. He will head to Louisville to compete alongside fellow Floyd County students Byron Cox, of South Floyd Middle School, who placed second, and Alisha Akers, of Betsy Layne Elementary, who placed fourth.
In mathematics, Blake Warrens, of Allen Central Middle School, placed fifth in regional and will compete on the level.
“Congratulations to our teams and students who excelled in this regional competition,” Supt. Henry Webb said. “The board team and I also want to say a special thanks to the coaches and parents for your commitment and time you have given to our academic teams. We want to congratulate Blake Warrens, Zach Caldwell, Byron Cox and Alisha Akers for advancing to state and wish them the best of luck.”
Overall, Adams Middle School placed third in regional competition, while South Floyd finished fourth, Allen Central finished fifth, and Betsy Layne finished seventh.
In future problem-solving, Adams finished third and Betsy Layne finished fourth. In quick recall, Allen Central finished third and South Floyd finished fourth.
The middle school Governor’s Cup competition will be held March 16-18.
