BETSY LAYNE - Allen Central captured the Floyd County Conference girls’ basketball championship on Wednesday night, outlasting host Betsy Layne 62-57 in overtime.
After losing a lead late in regulation, Betsy Layne rallied to win in the extra period.
Junior guard Sarah Rife saved the game for visiting Allen Central. Rife drained a pair of free throws with no time remaining in regulation to tie the contest 51-51 and send it into overtime.
The game’s leading scorer, Rife paced Allen Central with 22 points. Sophomore guard/forward Alyssa Moore accompanied Rife in double figures, adding 16 points for the Lady Rebels.
The Lady Rebels ended regular-season play undefeated in the Floyd County Conference/58th District, finishing 8-0. Allen Central has locked up the top seed for this year’s 58th District Girls’ Basketball Tournament.
After being outscored in the opening quarter, Allen Central battled back to lead 24-22 at halftime. The Lady Rebels managed to stretch their lead after intermission. Allen Central led 42-34 at the conclusion of the third quarter. Betsy Layne, however, limited the Lady Rebels in the fourth quarter, moving out in front before eventually losing the lead.
Rife scored all but two of Allen Central’s points in overtime.
Krista Parsons and Brooklyn Martin aided the Allen Central attack with six points apiece. Hannah MacElhose, DeShea Elliott and Elizabeth Prater added four points each for the Lady Rebels.
Three Ladycats reached double figures in the Betsy Layne scoring column as part of a balanced attack. Senior guard Paige Watkins paced Betsy Layne with 18 points. Sophomore guard Chloe Johnson scored 13 points and senior guard/forward T.J. Tackett tossed in 10 for the Lady Cats.
Brandy Morrow had six points, Kelsi Tackett four, Kayce Tackett three and Emily Kidd two for Betsy Layne in the loss.
