PIKEVILLE – The University of Pikeville softball team opened the 2013 season with a pair of losses at Virginia Intermont College on Saturday.
The Cobras struck the Bears 7-1 in the opener and 10-2 in the nightcap.
The Bears play their home opener on Friday afternoon when they host No. 24 Indiana Wesleyan at Paul Butcher Field. First pitch is set for noon.
VI 7, Bears 1: Already leading 1-0, the Cobras scored four in the second and added two in the fifth for the win.
Pikeville scored its only run in the top of the sixth when senior pitcher Kayla Morgan drove in freshman Heather Maynard with a single.
Junior shortstop Emily Castle had the only other hit.
Morgan struck out five but allowed 10 hits in the loss.
VI 10, Bears 2: Virginia Intermont scored five in the second and added multiple runs in the third and fourth frames to sweep the doubleheader in five innings.
Freshman Courtney Morgan delivered a run on a sacrifice fly and sophomore Sarah Kinney (Allen Central High School) delivered one on a single. In addition to Kinney, the Bears got hits from sophomore Brandi Jo Howard and freshman Hollie Hinkle.
Junior Caitlin Conley was the pitcher of record for the Bears, allowing all 10 runs, eight of them earned, on 12 hits in 3-1/3 while striking out three. Senior Courtney Patrick had two strikeouts to end the fourth inning.
