BOWLING GREEN - Shelby Valley’s run in the Houchens Industries Girls’ Sweet 16 ended on Friday in the quarterfinals. Anderson County built an early lead and never faltered, rolling to a 65-23 victory over 15th Region champion Shelby Valley at Western Kentucky University’s E.A. Diddle Arena.
Thriving from the opening tip, Anderson County scored the game’s first 14 points.
Junior Eriel McKee led Anderson County (34-1) with 24 points and 12 rebounds in only 21 minutes.
Anderson County, which claimed its 26th consecutive win, carried a commanding 37-13 lead into halftime.
The much bigger Anderson County team dominated on the glass, outrebounding Shelby Valley 41-17.
Shelby Valley struggled offensively, shooting just 21.4 percent from the field.
Makenzie Cann scored 11 points, dished out 10 assists and pulled down six rebounds for the Lady Bearcats.
Corrin Robinson, a sophomore reserve, added 10 points and four rebounds for the Anderson County girls’ basketball team.
Anderson County scored the first 11 points of the second half to push its advantage over Shelby Valley out to 35 points and force the contest to be played with a running clock for most the rest of the way.
Rachel Smith led Shelby Valley with 11 points, including three 3-point field goals.
Shelby Valley exited the 2012-13 season 29-5.
