PRESTONSBURG – Highlands Health System announces the introduction of a new digital phone system. Installed at Highlands’ locations within the region, the new system, Mitel 5330, is the latest technology in internet protocol (IP) based telephones. Highlands made the choice to use this technology when faced with the growing needs of the existing system.
“We have expanded our facilities throughout the region” said Bud Warman, President & CEO of Highlands, “and our communications needs have expanded as well.” Highlands, who operates clinics and medical offices in the four surrounding counties, has seen communications needs grow with its patient base. “Our patients and other customers want fast and easy access to information, and we need to deliver that,” says Warman.
The new system provides callers with menu options that reduce call wait time. Additional internal extensions have been added to allow direct dialing to many departments in the hospitals, as well as patient rooms.
“Each patient will now have a unique phone number during their stay with us,” said Maxanna Cook, Highlands Health System Director of Marketing & Public Relations. “Families and friends will be able to call directly to the bedside.”
Highlands’ phone extensions will now be displayed via caller ID on external lines, as well. This allows someone to know exactly who may have attempted to call them from any Highlands’ facility.
The new phone system is a big efficiency booster inside the organization as well. Departments can reach each other in a number of new ways including mobile access. These new features can improve communication between caregivers, which leads to better patient care.
“One of the biggest safety factors in healthcare is adequate communication” Cook said. “Our goal is to keep improving safety and efficiency for our patients.”
Highlands plans to have the system fully live on Tuesday, March 26. The main number to the hospital will remain (606) 886-8511. Highlands can also be reached from each of the surrounding counties without long distance charges: Johnson 789-6548, Magoffin 349-6100, Martin 298-7802, and Pike 437-6921.
