PRESTONSBURG - Prestonsburg is headed back to Lexington to play in the Touchstone Energy All “A” Classic. Senior pitcher Trey Stapleton pitched a complete game on Thursday to lead 15th Region champion Prestonsburg to a 5-2 win over Bath County in the All “A” Classic at StoneCrest.
Prestonsburg improved to 16-4 after posting the win.
Bath County, the champion out of the 16th Region, slipped to 10-4 as a result of the loss.
Stapleton registered seven strikeouts on his way to earning the win.
Bath County senior pitcher Cable Wright took the loss.
Visiting Bath County scored first but couldn’t keep the lead. The Wildcats led 1-0 after their initial at-bat. Prestonsburg answered with a run of its own in the bottom half of the first and never trailed again. The two teams were deadlocked 2-2 later in the game before Prestonsburg moved back out in front and went on to never trail again.
Finishing strong, host Prestonsburg plated two runs in the bottom half of the sixth inning.
Offensively, Stapleton helped his cause with two singles. Bryson Williams added a single and two runs for the Blackcats.
Grant Anderson (single, run), Hunter Brown (triple, run), Jarrin Hall (single, run), Dalton Shepherd (double, run) and J.D. Adams (single) also contributed for the Prestonsburg offense.
Prestonsburg will face Bethlehem in the opening round of the Touchstone Energy All “A” Classic on Saturday, May 4 at Whitaker Bank Park in Lexington. The home stadium of the Lexington Legends is set to host the statewide tournament May 4-5.
