PIKEVILLE – The latest signee for the University of Pikeville men’s basketball program is a senior guard who had unprecedented success at Bullitt East High School.
Tray Rakes, a 5-10 point guard from Mt. Washington, has signed a scholarship agreement with Coach Kelly Wells’ program.
Rakes averaged 9.3 points and 5.5 assists per game as a senior for the Chargers, who were 29-5 last season and won the 24th District championship before falling to Pleasure Ridge Park in the Region 6 semifinals.
Rakes, whose buzzer-beater in the 6th Region championship over PRP was the No. 1 play on ESPN’s Top 10, was a part of 108 wins in four seasons at Bullitt East.
“This young man is a winner,” said Wells. “You just can’t teach that. He knows how to win and how to lead a team in the right direction. He has an innate ability to put his team in a position to win basketball games and we’re thrilled to add him to our UPike family.”
Rakes scored 1,022 points in high school and ranked second on the school’s all-time list for assists with 590 and is third in school history with 262 steals. He was named to the Courier-Journal All-State Honorable-Mention team two times.
A three-time all-district pick, Rakes was twice named first-team all-region and was the 2012 Region 6 tournament co-MVP.
Last summer, Rakes placed for the Kentucky Junior All-Stars.
