Where do you want to go or what do you want to see on this journey we call life? Some aspire to see the pyramids or to climb Mount Everest; while others want to travel out West or even jump out of an airplane.
This is often referred to as your “bucket list” — a list of places that you would like to see or go before your time here has ended. Many times these adventures are related to a like interest that you may have. I personally have a desire to go and see Jerusalem and walk where Jesus walked. We all dream differently, but each dream is just as important as the next.
For one of our dear Elders, his dream was simply to visit a Bass Pro Shop. As an avid fisherman and hunter, Willie has a wide knowledge of the outdoors, every kind of bait to hook a fish, and just a general knowledge of an outdoorsman. Willie has gotten up in his years and didn’t think this dream would ever become a reality.
Thanks to the insight and keen observance of our maintenance director, Donnie Cole, he recently observed Willie’s desire to visit such a place. Donnie went and picked Willie up from his trip to Myrtle Beach last year and the place of meeting was the parking lot of the Bass Pro Shop in Pigeon Forge, Tenn. Willie marveled at this large store that simply stated Outdoor World on the outside. After asking Donnie about this place, Willie began to express his desire to go and see what this store had to offer.
After some planning, Donnie and I were blessed to partake in a simple but great adventure. Willie enjoyed virtual hunting, observing the great fish that were on the walls, a good meal from Uncle Buck’s, and of course more fishing lures than you could shake a pole at. Willie was like a kid at Disney World with his eyes filled with amazement and appreciation. Willie stated, “boys if they make it for fishing, they got it here somewhere.” Even the trip there and back was a blessing as Willie shared many of his childhood memories and tales of his storied life. A bond was built between us three that has drawn us closer together.
Now we plan to take Willie, and possibly some others out fishing at the local lake in the next couple weeks. Sometimes when you seek to bless others, you are the one that ends up receiving the blessing.
