PRESTONSBURG - The Prestonsburg Blackcats are closing in on a highly-anticipated home scrimmage. Prestonsburg will host a four-team high school football scrimmage on Saturday. Letcher County Central, Breathitt County and Boyd County are set to join the John DeRossett-coached Blackcats for the scrimmage.
Prestonsburg has been busy on the gridiron, practicing throughout the month. The Blackcats returned to practice on Tuesday evening.
The schedule for the upcoming scrimmage is 6-7:30 p.m. - Prestonsburg vs. Breathitt County, Letcher County Central vs. Boyd County; 7:30-9:30 p.m. - Letcher County Central vs. Prestonsburg; Breathitt County vs. Boyd County.
Defending Class 2A, District 8 champion Prestonsburg returns multiple key playmakers from the 2012 title team that narrowly missed out on playing for a Region 4 championship. The Blackcats concluded the 2012 season 8-4.
Letcher County Central is under the direction of new head coach Mike Holcomb. The longtime head coach at Breathitt County, Holcomb inherits a Letcher County Central team that concluded last season 2-9. Holcomb replaced Paul Rains as head coach of the Letcher County Central football team.
Kyle Moore is the new head coach at Breathitt County, which finished the 2012 season 12-1 under Holcomb’s leadership. The 2012 edition of the Breathitt County football team opened 12-0 before falling to Belfry in the Class 3A, Region 4 championship game.
First-year head coach John Gilliam will bring Boyd County to Prestonsburg for the four-team scrimmage. Gilliam is set to enter his first season as head coach at Boyd County following a long tenure as an assistant coach on the Morehead State University football program’s coaching staff. Boyd County exited the 2012 season 5-6. Gilliam, a Prestonsburg native, replaced Ray Brooks as head coach of the Boyd County football team.
The Prestonsburg-hosted scrimmage will begin at 6 p.m.
