EASTERN - Four Floyd County high school volleyball players have been honored before taking the court for their first match in the 2013 season. Allen Central’s Katie Kendrick (5-10, MH) and Rachel Moore (5-8, OH), Betsy Layne’s Allie Meade (5-7, MB) and South Floyd’s Joslyn Isaac (5-9, MB) have been honored as Players to Watch by the Kentucky Volleyball Coaches Association (KVCA).

All five Floyd County high school volleyball teams - Allen Central, Betsy Layne, Piarist School, Prestonsburg and South Floyd - will make debuts in the 2013 season next week.

Reigning 15th Region champion Allen Central is once again favored to win region and district titles. The Rebels remain the 58th District’s top team.

Allen Central is ranked first in the Kentucky Volleyball Coaches Association (KVCA) Preseason 15th Region Top 5 Poll. The Rebels are ranked ahead of East Ridge (T-2), Pikeville (T-2), Betsy Layne (4) and Paintsville (5).

East Ridge, the 15th Region runner-up from last season, is tied with Pikeville for second in the Preseason 15th Region Top 5 Poll.

Betsy Layne is ranked fourth and Paintsville fifth in the preseason poll, which was released on Friday.

Following a one-set loss to Greenwood in the opening round of the State Tournament, Allen Central exited the 2012 season 32-6.

Allen Central will host its annual preseason tournament/referee clinic at J.E. Campbell Arena on Saturday. This year’s Allen Central-hosted preseason tournament/referee clinic will include nine teams.

Each participating team in the preseason tournament/referee clinic will play two matches. An 18-minute junior varsity set will be played between two 16-minute varsity sets, for a total of 50 playing minutes per match. Each set’s score (varsity and junior varsity) will determine the results for placement in flights of the tournament. Tournament officials hope to begin a new match every hour.
