The Center for Rural Development has announced that Elizabeth Burton has joined the organization as Director of Business Development and Public Relations. She will focus on developing new business, expanding existing client relationships, fostering strategic relationships and partnerships, as well as overall marketing strategy and public relations management.
“Elizabeth has managed several high-growth initiatives and has extensive experience developing business opportunities, devising and implementing marketing strategies, and working in roles with significant public interface. Her experience and leadership will help us capitalize on growth areas and fulfill our mission to create sustainable communities,” commented Lonnie Lawson, President and CEO of The Center.
Burton, a native of Harrodsburg, said, “I am delighted to join The Center at such a pivotal time for our rural communities. I am convinced that The Center is the way forward for individuals and organizations in rural areas as they look to grow opportunities and create a better way of life.”

Burton brings with her over 20 years of business development, sales, and project management experience. Her expertise includes driving targeted business development activities, writing and presenting proposals/presentations, developing and managing business networks, contract negotiation, as well as scope development, planning, and leading projects.
Previously, Burton was director of sales administration for Polycom, a global, telecommunications company, where she led a U.S. based team focused on business development, marketing and sales enablement initiatives for the public sector. In addition, she has held positions as CEO of PrimePoint, Community Development Coordinator with the State of Missouri, Director of Government Affairs for the Columbia/Jefferson City, Missouri Board of Realtors and Associate with the University of Missouri-Columbia, Harry S Truman School of Public Affairs. She holds a Master’s Degree in Public Administration and is certified as an Economic Development Finance Professional.
