PRESTONSBURG - One Floyd County student is receiving high praise after being named one of three winners of a national essay contest.

Jason Blake Warrens from Allen Central Middle is a 2012-13 national essay winner of USA Today “Dream Up! Career Exploration Program.”

“The board team and I want to congratulate Blake for this amazing achievement,” said Floyd County Superintendent Henry Webb.

As a national winner, Blake will will be offered the opportunity to explore the field of Aerospace Engineering at the Kentucky Institute for Aerospace Education in Frankfort and the UAS lab at the University of Kentucky in Lexington. Touring the labs and speaking with student engineers about the unmanned aerial systems for research are just a couple of the activities Blake will experience to learn more about his career choice.

Webb says that Allen Central Middle School participates in a nine week career exploration program through this foundation where students explore careers based on interest, research those careers and focus on one career as the topic for their essays. Students from all over the United States submit essays concerning their “dream” career using facts from their research and there are only three national winners.

“Blake took full advantage of one of the many educational opportunities available to our students,” said Webb.

The Dream UP Career Exploration Program integrates career awareness and exploration into students’ middle school experience to help them start thinking about the future – and encourage them to stay in school as they get older. The program is implemented through the classrooms of National Board Certified Teachers across the country.
