CAMPBELLSVILLE – Led by Michael Fonseca with 1,031 total pins and a high game of 225, the University of Pikeville men’s bowling team finished in third place overall on Sunday at the fifth annual Green River Classic hosted by Campbellsville (Ky.) at Phillips Lanes.
Fonseca was the top Bear bowler, finishing in third place on the individual leaderboard, while Lucas Hohnstein finished just outside the top 10 in 11th with a 971. Fonseca’s 225 in his third game was the highest score by a Pikeville bowler all weekend.
UPIKE was in second place after Saturday’s competition with 4,822 pins, but Louisville took over the classic on Sunday, putting a whopping 2,366 pins on the board in the team Baker games.
The Cardinals used that performance to capture the team championship with a total score of 7,117. Campbellsville took second place with 7,095 and the Bears were third with 7,056.
Pikeville started slow in Baker competition, waiting until the eighth game to break 200 before going on to score a 223 in the 11th game and 222 in the 12th and final round.
Other UPIKE bowlers in the top 25 included Christopher Scott Canterbury in 15th place (953), Justin Edens in 17th (948) and Grant McNally taking 18th with 945 pins.
Pikeville’s first junior varsity team finished fourth in the standings with a score of 7,032, while the second junior-varsity squad finished ninth with 6,594 total pins.
The Bears will be back in action on Oct. 19-20 at the Orange & Black Classic in Dayton, Ohio.
