GEORGETOWN – The University of Pikeville men’s tennis team had a strong showing at the 2013 ITA Regional Tournament in late-September, highlighted by sending the doubles tandem of Sven Rodenbusch and Dmitry Bebenkob to the quarterfinals.
UPIKE sent eight members of its team to the tournament. The top two finishers in singles and doubles advance to the ITA National Championships in Fort Myers, Fla.
While Rodenbusch and Babenkov had the best showing for UPIKE, Marcos Sernandez Fondelius and Pawel Tarasewicz made strides in the doubles bracket as well, advancing to the round of 16.
“We had several guys win their opening match and that’s awesome,” said UPIKE tennis coach Tim Alderman. “Even though some lost the next round, they still managed to do well in the consolation bracket.
“The highlight of the tournament, to me, was when Marcos and Pawel fought like dogs and beat one of Lindsey Wilson’s doubles teams.”
Four out of six of the UPIKE singles entries advanced past their opening round opponent, while Babenkov advanced to the round of 16.
“From watching teams in the Mid-South Conference at the event, we will challenge for the title and I believe we are among the top three teams in the league.” said Alderman.
