ALLEN - The Prestonsburg K-5 girls’ basketball team captured its second straight Shag Campbell Tournament title on Monday at Allen Elementary. Prestonsburg defeated host Allen 29-21 in the championship game.

Prior to prevailing in the title matchup, Prestonsburg notched wins over Wesley Christian and Betsy Layne.

The Lady Blackcats, who improved to 6-0 following the successful three-game stretch in the tournament, played two games on Saturday to advance to the finals on Monday.

“The girls are playing really hard and playing team basketball,” Prestonsburg Coach Doug Hopkins commented. “In all three games, everyone, all 14 girls, got into the game. “These girls have come a long way. They are working really hard in practice. They continue to learn and grow with every game. We had a lot of different girls step up and play big for us.

“Special thanks goes to my assistant coach Ricky Ward. He puts in a lot of time and hard work with these girls. I also want to thank the fans and parents for supporting us and for letting us coach their girls. Special thanks also goes to our principal, Brent Rose, for his education to the girls’ program and thanks to assistant principals Carey Davis and Sean Ousley for all of their help.”
