SALYERSVILLE - After defeating 58th District/Floyd County Conference foe Piarist School for its win, Betsy Layne had the tough task of facing preseason 15h Region favorite Magoffin County in the Lady Hornets’ season-opener on Friday night. Magoffin County didn’t disappoint its fans in the home game. The Lady Hornets scored first, owned a double digit advantage before Betsy Layne scored its first points and never trailed en route to winning 73-34.
Following the loss, Betsy Layne fell to 1-2.
Longtime leader Jamie Castle, a senior guard, paced Magoffin County with a game-high 26 points. Leslee Howard scored 20 points and Jazzy Howard added 18 for the Lady Hornets.
Dominant throughout the non-district contest, Magoffin County led 43-14 at halftime.
Madison Reed and Alexis Montgomery rounded out the Magoffin County scoring with seven and two points, respectively.
Betsy Layne was held to 29.8 percent shooting (14 of 47). The Ladycats were only one of eight (12.5 percent) from 3-point range.
Betsy Layne was five of 16 (31.3 percent) from the free throw line.
The Ladycats were limited to 27 total rebounds.
Eddi Akers led Betsy Layne with 12 points and eight rebounds. Akers was the only Betsy Layne scorer to reach double figures. Emily Kidd scored seven points, Megan Frazier netted four and Katie Tackett tossed in three for the Ladycats.
Destiny Compton, Kaitlin Kidd, Bethany Kimbler and Kelsi Tackett added two points apiece for Betsy Layne in the loss.
Kidd and Kelsi Tackett pulled down six rebounds apiece for the Ladycats.
Betsy Layne committed 27 turnovers compared to only seven assists.
