BEREA – The Kentucky Association of Food Banks is pleased to announce that it has received a $10,000 grant award from the S.L. Gimbel Foundation Advised Fund at The Community Foundation in support of the Farms to Food Banks program.
The Farms to Food Banks program provides fresh, healthy produce to Kentuckians in need while reducing the amount of wasted food and providing additional markets for farmers. The association purchases at cost Kentucky-grown surplus and No. 2 produce that is edible but not saleable on the retail market. The produce is distributed free of charge to low-income Kentuckians through the food bank network.
“Demand for food assistance in Kentucky continues to skyrocket,” said Tamara Sandberg, Executive Director of the association. “We are grateful to be partnering with The Community Foundation to increase access to healthy food among hungry Kentuckians.”
According to data from Feeding America, the nation’s largest hunger-relief organization, 1 in 6 people in Kentucky do not always know where they will find their next meal.
Grant funds will be used to cover farmers’ costs for product that will be distributed free of charge to hungry Kentuckians in all 120 counties through the food bank network. It is food that would otherwise have gone to waste, either because of a lack of market for it due to minor blemishes or size discrepancies, or because of the costs associated with picking, packing, and transporting it to food banks.
