PRESTONSBURG - Betsy Layne fended off upset-minded Prestonsburg in the 58th District Girls’ Basketball Tournament at the Prestonsburg Fieldhouse on Wednesday, defeating the Lady Blackcats 53-44 to advance to the district title game versus Allen Central.
Brandy Morrow paced Betsy Layne with a game-high 16 points. Morrow was the only Betsy Layne player to reach double figures but the Ladycats turned in a balanced scoring effort. Just missing double figures, Katie Tackett and Emily Kidd added nine points apiece for the Ladycats.
Betsy Layne, under the guidance of first-year head coach Randy Coleman, led at the conclusion of each quarter. The Ladycats outscored Prestonsburg 9-3 in the first quarter and took a 26-16 lead into halftime.
Betsy Layne remained out in front throughout the second half. The Ladycats led 39-28 at the end of the third quarter.
Eddie Akers scored eight points and Kelsi Tackett chipped in seven for Betsy Layne in the win.
Betsy Layne got to the foul line early and often, finishing 17-of-48 from the charity stripe.
For Prestonsburg, Tiffany Meadows and Janna Jarvis led the way with 10 points apiece. Allyson DeRossett and Maddy Ousley followed, scoring six points each for the Lady Blackcats.
Additional scorers for Prestonsburg were Reesce Endicott (four points), Shantale Collins (four points), Lauren Lick (two points), Jackie Kidd (one point) and Maddy Rainey (one point).
Prestonsburg, under the direction of first-year head coach Brandon Gearheart, shot 50 percent (14-of-28) from the foul line.
