MARTIN — Recognizing the substantial contributions made to his community and the void left by his untimely passing, members of the Martin City Council were invited to a memorial and celebration of the life and work of Dr. Mahendra Varia.
Dr. Varia’s widow, Dr. Chandra Varia, was understandably emotional as she addressed the council at their regular meeting on Tuesday evening.
The April 25 celebration is the coordination of state, county and local officials. In the morning, a ceremony will dedicate the hill visible when driving into Martin as “Varia Hill,” with a large sign to that effect.
Afterwards, attendees will be served a boxed lunch—and from April 25 onward, different nursing homes in the area will be served a boxed lunch every month as well.
That afternoon, the Big Sandy Community and Technical College in Prestonsburg will name a campus gazebo the “Varia Gazebo,” with refreshments served afterwards in the Varia Student Lounge.
Organizers expect over 500 attendees for the day’s events.
