EASTERN - Allen Central claimed the Red Flight championship of its annual preseason tournament. The Rebels defeated East Ridge and Perry County Central to earn 107 points. Phelps beat Sheldon Clark but fell to East Ridge in the preseason high school volleyball tournament. Perry County defeated Sheldon Clark in another match during the event.

The Rebels have captured three straight 15th Region volleyball titles. Allen Central, under the direction of veteran head coach Larry Maynard, captured its third straight 15th Region title in 2013, defeating Pikeville in the title tilt. The Rebels compiled a 33-7 record last season. Henry Clay ended Allen Central’s postseason run in 2013, blanking the Rebels 3-0 (25-11, 25-14, 26-24) in the KHSAA Volleyball State Tournament.

One of the state’s top high school volleyball programs, Allen Central is picked second behind first-place Pikeville in the Kentucky Volleyball Coaches Association’s Preseason 15th Region Top 5 Poll.

A longtime Floyd County volleyball frontrunner, Allen Central competes with Betsy Layne, Piarist School, Prestonsburg and South Floyd in the 58th District.

Allen Central is scheduled to visit 58th District foe Prestonsburg on Thursday.
