PRESTONSBURG — An online effort to obtain Christmas presents for some who might not otherwise receive any is once again underway, and this year has expanded the effort once again.

“Facebook Angels” organizer Brent Graden said this year’s effort has expanded beyond Prestonsburg nursing homes to now also include those residing in Mountain Comprehensive Care Center’s adult and child crisis centers.

As of Tuesday afternoon, Graden was still attempting to fill the remaining slots on a list with 175 names. The list includes the names of each recipient, as well as some items those people would like to receive.

In many cases, the wishes are modest and include items such as socks, blankets, Western novels, lotion and candy.

Under the initiative, Graden publicizes the list of names, then asks people in the community to “adopt” one or more names on the list, promising to obtain at least some of the items for which they have asked.

“We decided to try to use the power of social media to do something for our community, and we’re getting it done,” Graden said of the effort, now in its third year.

Graden said the gifts make a world of difference to the recipients.

“There’s a lot of times when they don’t have that Christmas miracle happen for them,” Graden said. “They don’t have a lot of family, so we’ve been doing this and I think we get more out of it than they do.”

As of Tuesday, 110 of the 175 slots were filled.
