PIKEVILLE – Junior forward Brogan Conley turned in her second double-double in 18 hours to lead the University of Pikeville past Virginia Intermont College 83-55 Saturday afternoon at the UPIKE Gym.

The win was Pikeville’s fifth in six games and, after an 0-4 start, drew the Bears even at 5-5 on the season. They were led by Conley’s 16 points and 13 rebounds to go with four assists for a team with 28 helpers on 32 baskets for the day.

Virginia Intermont, however, fell below break-even at 6-7 on the season.

The Bears jumped out to an early lead and never looked back. Freshman Peyton Wright had five points as her team jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the first 2:14. The edge reached double figures for the first time with 15:51 left when a three-point shot by junior Callisha Johnson pushed it to 14-4.

Pikeville closed out the half by hitting 51.5 percent overall and 46.7 percent from the arc. That, combined with holding the Cobras to 36.7 percent shooting, allowed the Bears to lead 44-30 at recess.

It was more of the same in the second half. While the Cobras pulled within 14 in the middle of the half, Pikeville led by as many as 33 two times late in the game before the margin settled at 28.

Senior guard Sally Roberts had 12 points to follow Conley, while freshman Peyton Wright had 10 points and five rebounds. Sophomore Christin Haney had six assists to match her point total.

The Bears were dominant on the glass again, winning that battle 50-33 thanks to 18 offensive boards.

Virginia Intermont was led by sophomore Rainey Story, who came off the bench for 15 points and five rebounds, tying for top honors there as well.

Junior Kayla Orrick followed with 12 points and five rebounds while sophomore Radvile Autukaite tossed in 11.

The Bears are currently on a nine-day break which includes exams this week. Pikeville will meet Alice Lloyd when it returns to action early next week. The Bears and Lady Eagles will meet on Monday, Dec. 17 at 4 p.m. at the East Kentucky Expo Center.
