PRESTONSBURG — A first-degree assault and sexual abuse case will be among those reviewed by the Floyd County Grand Jury in the coming months.

Two cases were remanded to the Floyd County grand jury this week, following their preliminary hearings.

According to court records, James Brandon Fields, 28, of Prestonsburg, was arrested on New Year’s Day after allegedly assaulting a man at the Seasons Inn near Martin. The police report states that the victim of the assault was Jeff Blackburn, son of Floyd County Sheriff John K Blackburn.

Blackburn sustained severe head injuries during the assault.

Fields has been in trouble with the law on several previous occasions, including being found guilty of hindering prosecution in 2011, and second- and third-degree possession of a controlled substance in 2009.

Fields was released from the Floyd County Detention Center on a $7,500 cash bond and is now confined to home incarceration.

Also sent to the grand jury this week was a case against Sammy Meade, 51, of Drift. According to court records Meade is charged with first-degree sexual abuse, first-degree indecent exposure, and distribution of obscene matter to minors.

In the complaint against Meade, which was filed Dec. 18 by Kentucky State Police Trooper Adam Hensley, Meade allegedly “exposed his genitals and forced a minor 8 years old to have sexual contact with the defendant and the defendant showed said minor child sexual graphic images of himself and his girlfriend.”

Meade is currently being held in the Floyd County Detention Center on a $25,000 cash bond.
