HI HAT - The Kentucky High School Basketball Hall of Fame will be honoring Floyd Countians King Kelly Coleman (Wayland High School) and Gerri Grigsby (McDowell High School), the king and queen of Kentucky high school basketball, during the South Floyd-Allen Central boys’ and girls’ basketball games on Friday, Jan. 25.

The two legendary high school basketball players were inducted into the 2012 Centennial Class of the Kentucky High School Basketball Hall of Fame over the summer in Elizabethtown, home of the KHSBHF. The Kentucky High School Basketball Hall of Fame awards’ program calls for one of the inductee awards to go to the school where he or she played. Via consolidation, Wayland High School became a part of Allen Central High School. Under consolidation, McDowell High School became a part of South Floyd High School. The awards will be directed to Allen Central and South Floyd, respectively.

During the 1955-56 season, his senior campaign, Coleman scored 1,919 points, averaging 46.8 point per game.

As a junior, Coleman netted 1,174 points in 36 contests.

In the fall of 1974, Grigsby, then 15, started her sophomore year of high school basketball. That year, she scored 1,079 points, followed by efforts of 1,421 and 1,885 points in her junior and senior years, respectively. At the time, her three-year total of 4,385 was the national record. The mark was the Kentucky state scoring record for both boys and girls. In addition, her single-season total of 1,885 points in 1976-77 still ranks as the national record in that category.
