Wesley Christian finishes runner-up in SJI

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - The Wesley Christian High School boys’ basketball team just missed capturing a title in one of the area’s most prestigious tournaments over the weekend. Wesley Christian finished runner-up to Charleston Catholic in the Blue Bracket of the 36th Annual CSX Transportation St. Joseph Invitational at the Big Sandy Superstore Arena. Charleston Catholic pulled off a successful come-from-behind effort, defeating Wesley Christian 47-43 for the SJI’s Blue Bracket championship.

Charleston Catholic played from behind for most of the game.

Nick Casto paced Charleston Catholic with a game-high 16 points. Nick George joined Casto in double figures, adding 15 points for the Irish.

Wesley Christian started strong, outscoring Charleston Catholic 18-14 in the opening quarter. But the Riders faced a much more competitive Charleston Catholic club in the second period. Following an 11-7 run from Charleston Catholic in the second quarter, the Irish sent the game into halftime tied 25-25.

Wesley Christian managed to limit Charleston Catholic throughout the third quarter, outscoring the Irish 10-6.

Charleston Catholic, however, finished strong. The Irish doubled up Wesley Christian 16-8 in the fourth quarter to pull out the hard-fought win.

Three Wesley Christian scorers reached double figures. Joshua Amuzu paced the Riders with a team-best 14 points. Stephen Goble scored 12 points and Dishawn Thompson tossed in 10 for the Riders.
