PRESTONSBURG — The Floyd County Fiscal Court gave tentative approval to a jail budget Friday that would see the county pay more to make up for less in state payments.

Magistrates held the first reading of a $3 million jail budget for the 2013-14 fiscal year, of which the county’s contribution will be $2.45 million.

County treasurer David Layne said the county’s share of the jail budget is $300,000 higher than the previous year, because the state has greatly reduced the number of Class D felons it houses in county jails as part of its own cost-savings measures.

The jail budget includes expenditures of $937,000 for operating expenses, $908,000 for salaries, $539,000 for administration, $456,000 for debt service, and $160,000.

The jail budget will require a second reading before the court and a vote by magistrates before becoming final.
