WHEELWRIGHT – One of the two new moves to restructure at Otter Creek Correctional Center is in place. Late last month, Randy Stovall resumed his position as warden of the prison and, according to public relations officer Greg Compton, a second move will be coming in the weeks ahead.
Stovall returned to Wheelwright following an appointment from the prison’s parent company, Corrections Corporation of America. The appointment comes after the removal of past warden Jeff Little this past week.
The details or terms of that removal are not clear, even to Compton, who said the prison and its administrators had not been given any further word about Little.
“We’re not sure what the circumstance is with Jeff,” Compton said. “We haven’t been told.”
Calls placed to CCA were not returned Thursday.
But for now, Stovall is back in place and awaiting what is being referred to as a “re-missioning” of the facility to send out the female inmates and bring back a male inmate population. The prison operated for the first several years in Wheelwright as an all-male facility.
The prison has been in the spotlight in the past several months due to a string of sexual abuse allegations and at least one conviction of sexual abuse against a former correctional officer.
As of Thursday, however, Compton was also unsure of the timing for the switch back to male inmates.
“We still have the same female population at this time,” he said. “We have been told there will be a transition, but at this time it has not taken place.”
Since leaving Otter Creek, Stovall has remained an employee of CCA, serving as warden at the company’s 816-bed Lee Adjustment Center in Beattyville, which houses male inmates for Kentucky and Vermont.
“As we continue to transition Otter Creek, Warden Stovall’s return made great sense,” said Steve Conry, CCA’s vice president of operations. “Serving as the warden of CCA’s Lee Adjustment Center since 2004, Stovall has earned the trust and respect of his colleagues and our government partners. His extensive correctional experience managing male offender populations and familiarity with the Otter Creek facility will serve CCA and our government partners well.”
