MARTIN — Seven more hopefuls filed to run for political office this past week for Floyd County’s upcoming Nov. 2 general election, all of them residents of Martin.
Of those seven, all but one were candidate filings for positions on the Martin City Council, while the seventh was also a Martin resident and a wife of one of the city council candidates.
Dr. Chandra Varia, a long-serving member of the city’s council, filed her paperwork to run again for a seat on the Floyd County School Board in District 2, while her husband, Mehendra R. Varia, has decided to run again for his seat on the council.
While Mehendra filed for his seat on the council on July 27, five others filed the next day within an hour of each other to fill out the current list of candidates for the council.
Deborah L. Bently, Eulene H. Ratliff, April L. Gayheart, Judith K. Stumbo and Bobby Dingus, all filed on July 28 for seats on Martin’s governing body.
The deadline to file for city and school races is Aug. 10.
