PIKEVILLE — A joint effort between Big Sandy Community and Technical College’s Care Club and Gearheart Communications provided food to flood victims in Pike County at the American Red Cross Shelter at Pike County Central High School on July 22.
“We wanted to offer comfort in the form of a warm meal to those who have had their lives torn apart by the flood,” said Tammy Compton, LCSW, coordinator of the human services program at the college and leader of the Care Club. “It was a wonderful feeling to see the folks come in and enjoy a warm meal and simply take a break from their troubles. Through the work of so many wonderful volunteer organizations, these people will rebuild their lives. I am very fortunate to work for a college that encourages community service, and this was a wonderful way to give back and help our friends and neighbors during a time of need.”
The Care Club comprises students who are seeking degrees in social work, counseling and other support agencies.
The Care Club reportedly smoked around 50 pounds of pork to feed the flood victims, and Gearheart Communications provided all of the other food items.
“We are very pleased to partner with Big Sandy Community and Technical College’s Care Club,” said Health Wiley, marketing director at Gearheart Communications. “In times of tragedy, Eastern Kentuckians come together and help their neighbors pick up the pieces.”
Along with participating in the food project, Gearheart Communications also delivered toiletries and cleaning supplies to local shelters.
“The people affected by this flood are not only our customers, they are our friends and neighbors, and, in some cases, our co-workers,” Wiley said. “We will continue to work diligently to help the people of Eastern Kentucky rebuild.”
