UPIKE student art featured at Weber Art Gallery

PIKEVILLE – The Weber Art Gallery at the University of Pikeville is currently featuring the works of graduating senior Andrea Paige.

The senior art show meets part of the exit requirements for a graduating art major and reflects the student’s development and interests. Paige’s show features a variety of media including found materials, spray paint, acrylic paint, oil paint, ink, graphite, plaster, wood, wire and several pieces created with book pages.

“The majority of my art is about trying different techniques and styles. I think that finding the way you work and what kind of artwork you like making is one of the most important things you can do as an artist,” said Paige. “If I had not experimented in so many different styles and techniques I would not have found out that I enjoy creating art using old books, spray paint and making paintings with the traditional acrylic/oil paints.”

Paige is the daughter of Mike and Bonnie House and the wife of Corey Paige of Pikeville.

“Andrea’s art can be described with two words – simplicity and sophistication. On the surface, her artwork appears straightforward and she completes her art with what seems like effortlessness and ease but this appearance is deceptive,” said Petra Carroll, associate professor of art. “Underneath the surface of Andrea’s art and the appearance of simplicity lies complexity – complexity in knowledge, in technique, in form and in content. This contradiction makes experiencing the layers of her artwork both delightful and intriguing.”

The art show will run through Friday. Paige will discuss her artwork during a reception on Friday at 7 p.m. The community is cordially invited to the art show and reception.

The Weber Art Gallery is located on the second floor of the Record Memorial Building at the University of Pikeville. Gallery hours are: Monday and Wednesday 9 a.m.-5 p.m.; Tuesday and Thursday 9-11:30 a.m. and 1:30-5 p.m.; and Friday 9 a.m.-2 p.m. For more information or additional gallery hours, contact Pat Kowalok at 606-218-5758 or Carroll at 606-218-5759.
