There’s a holiday feast with four excellent choices for entertainment and not a calorie in sight.
SHAUN THE SHEEP – The whole family can have a barrel of laughs with the antics in this animated comedy from the folks who brought you ‘Wallace and Gromit.” Shaun is a bored sheep who convinces his flock mates to fool their farmer into giving them the day off. Things go wrong and they wind up in the big city trying to rescue the farmer afar a concussion gives him amnesia. Lots of slapstick humor that makes this feel like ‘the Three Stooges’ with fleece.
AMERICAN ULTRA- Jesse Eisenberg and Kristen Stewart star as a slacker couple whose lives get turned upside down when the male is awoken form his status as a super ‘sleeper’ agent. Saving the world is that much tougher when you have a stoner in tow and lack the credibility of a suave James Bond demeanor. Fun and dumb like movies ought to be after a big meal.
NO ESCPAE – Drama and action mix perfectly in this story of an American family that is forced to flee a Southeast Asian country when the government becomes unstable and rioting makes it impossible to figure out where to go or who to trust. Owen Wilson is fine as the dad who must place his trust in a mysterious but capable, stranger (Pierce Brosnan)
RICKI AND THE FLASH – Lots of talent comes together to create this dramatic look at a family torn apart when the mother goes off to sing in a bar band. Meryl Streep is well cast as the woman who tries to come home again after a long absence from her family which has learned to get by without her. Well written by Diablo Cody and directed by Jonathan Demme(Silence of the Lambs).
