December will get off to a plodding start for renters with a few direct to video flicks and the odd TV show.
COOTIES – Your best bet this was probably this horror/comedy that depicts a zombie like outbreak at an elementary school. The infection, of course, springs forth from the cafeteria food and turns the children into feral, flesh eating, brats. The teachers must cope with breaking school rules if they are ever going to escape as well as rethinking their thoughts on corporal punishment. Elijah Wood and Rainn Wilson star.
ZOO – James Patterson’s novel comes to television as a series about the world coming under attack by animals. This is way too long(should have been a mini-series at the most). The special effects are good but it is basically a big budget remake of ‘Frogs.”
FEAR THE WALKING DEAD – Fans of the hit series may enjoy this prequel which focuses on the start of the zombie epidemic. The first season is a scant six hours but it is slow going and though the cats and writing are fine. If you enjoy the action tropes of the original series this might be a bit of a slog .
YAKUZA APOCALYPSE – A Japanese gangster harbors a dark secret in this action filled romp from Takashi Miike(who is Japan’s answer to Quentin Tarantino). Trns out this gangster is actually a vampire and he has insulted an international group of blood suckers and now they have tracked him down. His last act is to make his second in command a fellow vampire and it falls to this loyal lieutenant to build an army and get some revenge . Fun stuff if you can sweat the subtitles.
