HEIST – Action fans will dig this caper flick. Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Dave Bautista star as a pair of guys who need money and opt to rob a casino. The plan goes awry and a shootout spoils their escape route. the men wind up commandeering a bus and now must elude the police as well as an angry mobster(the always dependable Robert DeNiro). It’s a sad comment that this flick couldn’t land a wide theatrical release.
BONE TOMAHAWK – Western fans are in for a treat with this sagebrush story that also adds a generous dose of horror. Kurt Russell stars as a determined sheriff who puts together a posse to track and rescue kidnapped citizens from his town. It’s a dangerous journey that gets only more hazardous when they realize their prey are sadistic cannibals who employ the titular weapon.
A WALK IN THE WOODS – Bill Bryson’s non-fiction book makes for an entertaining “dramadey. ” Robert Redford stars as the author . Facing retirement he opts for one last adventure by planning to hike the Appalachian trail on foot all the way from Georgia to Maine. Along for the hike is a buddy, Nick Nolte, with a separate agenda. he just wants to go off the grid and avoid some debt collectors. Redford is good here and Nolte manages some moments , though his role was originally planned for the late Paul Newman.
TOKYO GHOUL – Anime fans finally have something to sing about with this intense series about a man struggling to stay sane after being bitten by a beast. I The story posits that present day Tokyo is also the home to Ghouls, supernatural creatures that feed on humans. Unfortunately they look just like anyone else until they attack. When a man is savaged by one he survives only to find he is slowly becoming a Ghoul himself. The series mixes gore , action , and drama to explore how this condition forces the man to define his humanity and cling to it. Heavy stiff but there is never a dull moment.
