Renters had plenty of reasons to stay home this week and this week’s releases made for a fine diversion from the frigid temperatures.
THE MARTIAN – When a crewman is left behind by the first Mars expedition he must figure out two things. How to get a message out that he is still alive and then comes the hard part. Staying alive till his ride home can navigate the long trip to fetch him. Matt Damon stars in this effort that turns into a celebration of intelligence and stubbornness as our hero must figure this all out for himself.
MR. ROBOT – The USA Network continues to craft edgy dramas with this story of a socially awkward computer programmer who finds himself recruited by a clandestine group that is trying to bring down the company he works for and expose it as an evil entity. Who is telling the truth? It’s an edgy concept that is well maintained throughout the first season which packs a stunner of an ending. Warning “this one is addictive.
HOTEL TRANSYLVANIA 2 – The kids will enjoy this sequel which finds Dracula sweating over the development of his grandson. When the child shows no signs of being scary the fanged one enlists his monster buddies to try and bring out the child’s ghoulish nature. Goofy fun with Adam Sandler returning as Dracula.
SINISTER 2 – The serial killing spirit returns in this poorly executed sequel . This time the focus is on a mother raising twin boys. Unfortunately this follow up just doesn’t have the same sense of suspense and winds being a ‘by the numbers” haunting. Gruesome but without any bite.
