There were nothing but winners for those renters who opted to stay home and avoid the allergens that accompany spring.
POINT BREAK – High octane remake of the goofy 80’s crime drama that had Keanu Reeves infiltrating Patrick Swayze’s group of athletic bank robbers. This time out the stakes are higher as the gang wants to disrupt the global economy. The stunts are bigger too with amazing camera work capturing such extreme sports as high speed motor cycling, free rock climbing, and wing suit flying.
THE HATEFUL EIGHT- Quentin Tarantino’s knack for staging violent set pieces is paired with some amazing camera work and his trademark colorful dialogue in this western. The story plays out more like an Agatha Christie production with an octet of mysterious characters held up (during a blizzard) at an Inn where they soon turn on each other. It’s all held together with standout performances from Kurt Russell, Samuel L. Jackson, Jennifer Jason-Leigh, and Walton Goggins(Justified). Good stuff but be warned that there is a brutal moment that rivals that of the rape scene in ‘Deliverance.”
CONCUSSION – Will Smith stars in this thoughtful account of an immigrant doctor who went head to head with the NFL over the sensitive issue of head trauma. Smith is quite good as the reserved physician who becomes a passionate crusader when he diagnoses a pattern of brain injuries related to football. Alec Baldwin and Albert Brooks also star.
CHERRY FALLS – This excellent 90’s horror flick finally lands a Blu Ray release. It is a smart dissection of horror tropes that finds a serial killer targeting teenagers in a small town . Turns out this psycho only goes after girls who have managed to abstain from sexual contact which adds an element of black humor as the local now have an extra weapon to pressure them into misbehaving. A solid cast includes Brittany Murphy, Michael Biehn, Candy Clark, and Jay Mohr. The excellent script is also available as a feature and reads even darker than the finished product which was heavily edited.
