A small week for new releases will feature a couple of gems but the big release will be the following week as ‘The Revenant” finally hits the shelves.
THE FOREST – A young woman (Natalie Dormer of Game of Thrones)heads to the titular location to find her missing sister in this low key horror yarn. The location is in Japan and it has a reputation for drawing the depressed who then take their lives there. Good eerie stuff here and this place actually exists and reportedly draws more lost souls than San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge.
HEROES REBORN – The cult series (that only lasted 4 seasons) gets a reboot here but is not as successful as the recent ‘X-Files” reboot. The story finds a new generation of people gifted with odd powers. they find that these mutations are a rotten present that draws a secret group after them who wish to harness their new found powers. Sadly this al goes epic with a huge conspiracy and global threat when it would have benefitted from a more intimate storyline about learning who one can trust.
STANDOFF – A deeply troubled vet is all that stands between a young girl and a cold blooded killer in this tense thriller. You have seen this redemption story before and this modern day thriller harkens back to the original roots of this tale (Shane) by playing like a western. The lean running time of an hour and twenty minutes helps as do the performances of Thomas Jane as the troubled good guy and Laurence Fishburne as the slick assassin.
JUSTICE LEAGUE VS. THE TEEN TITANS – When Batman’s new ward (Damian) acts up during a mission he is sent down to the Teen Titans to learn his place. Unfortunately a super villain emerges who possess the League . This ,of course, forces the Titans to take them on in an epic battle. The animated DC films continue to serve as the best place to see epic battles between super powered groups and this film shows that it is still the case.
