A less than stellar week for releases will see the returns of a classic action series and one under marketed diamond in the rough.
THE 5TH WAVE – This apocalyptic sci-fi flick got zero publicity but delivers the goods. The story takes place after an alien invasion that has left humans scattered after four successful campaigns by the ‘E.T. s.”The survivors have little organization and no confidence as they wait out the titular event. Good stuff with powerful performances by Chloe Moretz and Liev Schreiber.
JOY – Jennifer Lawrence stars in this biography of eh woman who invented the self wringing ‘Miracle Mop.” Turns out her life was pretty dysfunctional until that point and this film traces her failed marriage as well as bizarre living situation that saw her supporting her depressed mother, two children, and her ex-husband by working as an airline ticket clerk. You really want to root for this blue collar hero but the story completely bog down about the midpoint.
SHARKANSAS WOMAN’S PRISON MASSACRE – Traci Lords stars in this perfectly titled flick that, sadly, can’t deliver the goods . A ‘Fracking” episode releases prehistoric sharks from the earth (where have we seen that plot point before?) which then ruin a work detail of prisoners who look more like super models.
AIRWOLF – The classic action series is available in one set for under 30 bucks. Jan-Michael Vincent stars as a Vietnam war veteran recruited to steal and pilot a super weapon /helicopter. Ernest Borgnine is along as his mechanic/surrogate dad and Alex Cord is sinister but almost trustworthy as their C.I.A. contact. Fun stuff form the creator of ‘Quantum Leap.”
