A pair of big budget comedies shared the shelves this week with two lower key items that were both worthy of a good look.
HOW TO BE SINGLE – The ups and downs of dating are comedic ally rendered in this well acted and raunchy look at four women living in New York City. A few slows sots but definitely good for laughs. Rebel Wilson steals it as a frank and savvy single who help her less outgoing pal, played by Dakota Johnson.
DARLING – Horror films don’t get much better than this eerie tale of a young woman charged with looking after an old mansion. Lauren Ashley Carter stars as the young lady who soon begins to question her perception of reality after moving into the home which has a twisted history.. beautifully rendered in black and white photography from the folks who made ‘House of the Devil.”
RISEN- A roman centurion is tasked with investigating rumors of a risen Jewish prophet in this period drama. Joseph Feinnes stars as the officer who undertakes this assignment after the events at Calvary by Pontius Pilate(played by Peter Firth of ‘Equus’ fame). Very similar to ‘The Inquiry” which featured Keith Carradine as the officer and Harvey Keitel as Pilate.
ZOOLANDER 2 – Ben Stiller is back as a pampered male model who teams up with his rival ,Owen Wilson, when his fame is threatened by anew presence ,Will Ferrell. Great cast but sorely wasted. Moderately better than the first one which makes this bland effort just mediocre.
