FRANKFORT — The Kentucky Arts Council is accepting applications for the Architectural Artists Directory through Aug.15. Professional artists age 21 or older whose work includes architectural elements, custom-made fixtures, and uniquely crafted building materials and design elements are encouraged to apply.
“The Architectural Artists Directory is an adjudicated resource that connects builders, designers and private clients to talented artists,” said Lori Meadows, arts council executive director. “The artists in the directory have proven that they have the capacity to create exquisite work to fit any space.”
For Lexington glass artist Dan Neil Barnes, inclusion in the directory helped him secure a major project.
“The largest commission I’ve ever gotten was the work that’s hanging in the Owensboro Convention Center,” Barnes said. “That partially came from me being in the Architectural Artists Directory.”
Barnes, along with several other artists in the directory, participates in the Ideas Gallery annually at Kentucky Crafted: The Market. The gallery is exclusively for members of the directory.
“It’s another avenue that supports me as an artist,” Barnes said. “This past year at The Market, I talked to (Alltech co-founder) Deirdre Lyons about some work and was able to show her two projects I’m working on. Applying for the directory is definitely a good opportunity, but only if you choose to take it.” Participation is intended for artists whose work is constructed as an integral part of a room, building, outdoor space or other structure. Examples include cabinetry, murals, light fixtures, sinks and stained-glass windows.
