Cult entertainment was the theme this week with one major release and a slew of brain candy for the older set.
THE ANGRY BIRDS MOVIE – This animated adaptation of the popular device game was aimed at kids though more adults probably played it. A huge comic cast is on hand to tell the story of how these birds got so riled up in the first place. Problems begin when their peaceful island is invaded by Green Pigs and these porkers are up to no good. The cast includes Josh Gad, Jason Sudekis, Keegan-Michael Key, Peter Dinklage, and Maya Rudolph.
ASH VS EVIL DEAD – This “Starz Channel” series picks up twenty years after the film franchise. Ash is now frittering away his life on the outskirts of Grand Rapids in a trailer park while clocking in at a dead end retail job. Unfortunately he is still an arrogant doofus and he ,once again, releases the evil dead by reciting lines from the Necrinomicon. Luckily he teams up with a young man and woman but they are in way over their collective heads. Bruce Campbell is solid in this role and makes Ash a melon head you can root for.
WILD IN THE STREETS – A 24 year old singer finds himself elected president in this counter culture oddity from 1968 . Christopher Jones stars as the charismatic performer who immediately throws everyone over 30 in a prison camp after elected. An eclectic cast includes Shelly Winters, Richard Pryor, and Hal Holbrook.
AMERICAN NINJA 1-4 – A quartet of action epics form the 80’s that feature Michael Dudikoff , Steve James, and David Bradley as military men with mad martial arts skills. In each film they are pressed into service to aid fellow Americans who are usually being kidnapped by power hungry mad men who threaten the world with nukes , chemicals, or germs. Comic book stuff that is fun and usually pretty stupid. Well produced by Cannon Studios who excelled at throwing lots of money at goofy concepts as long as they included action and sexy ladies.
