PRESTONSBURG – In addition to a new tip line, the Floyd County Sheriff’s Department has had a great deal of good fortune with its social media presence working as a tool for communication, Floyd Sheriff John Hunt says.

““Since launching the department’s Facebook page in Nov. of 2014, it has garnered nearly 7,000 followers,” Hunt said Tuesday. “The page is used to communicate traffic alerts, severe weather alerts, special community projects, and to alert the community when their assistance is needed to bring criminals to justice.”

Hunt says social media is no longer simply a networking tool, categorizing it as a “necessity” at this point and time.

“Social media is powerful communication tool and a necessity in fighting crime in the 21st Century,” added Hunt. “I am grateful that the citizens of Floyd County have found our page and using it to assist our efforts to serve and protect Floyd County citizens.”

Last week the Floyd County Sheriff’s Office released home video of an unidentified man stealing a Weedeater from a private residence in the Prater Creek area of Floyd County. After posting the video on the Sheriff’s Facebook Page, tips were received as to the identity of the thief and the whereabouts of the stolen Weedeater.

Hunt and his deputies investigated the tips, retrieved the Weedeater and have returned it to the owner. An arrest warrant has been taken out for Ronald Raymond, a resident of Honaker. Hunt has asked that anyone with information on Raymond’s whereabouts to call his office at either the main line or the tip line.

Since being elected sheriff, and taking office three months earlier than expected in Oct. 2014, Sheriff Hunt has launched the department’s Facebook page; garnered a faithful following on Twitter; implemented the new tip line, and soon plans, he said, to launch an Instagram account and a new website that will provide taxpayers the ability to pay property taxes online, as well as many other features.
