MADISONVILLE – Dr. Kathryn Miller, professor and coordinator of the Computer and Information Technologies program at Big Sandy Community and Technical College (BSCTC), was a recipient of the Horizon award at the Phi Theta Kappa state convention on Saturday, March 25 at Madisonville Community and Technical College.

Dr. Miller serves as an advisor for BSCTC’s Alpha Nu Zeta chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, alongside Diana Pack and Mark Wells.

“This is a tremendous honor,” said Dr. Miller, who has worked at BSCTC since 2004. The Horizon award is given annually to an outstanding Phi Theta Kappa advisor. “None of this would be possible if not for the dedication of our students and their commitment to service.”

Dr. Alan Scheibmeir, interim president of BSCTC, said the award “demonstrates the high level of commitment Dr. Miller has to our Phi Theta Kappa chapter and the students at our college.”

BSCTC was also the recipient of the Phi Theta Kappa Chapter of the Year award. They also brought home the Five-Star chapter award, as well as Distinguished Chapter recognition. They also won first place in the Honors in Action projects and were first runner-up in the Distinguished College Project award. Abby Varney, a Pikeville High School student and member of the Early College Academy, was the recipient of the Distinguished Chapter Officer award.
