LEXINGTON – A former Johnson Central High School teacher admitted to having sex with an under age student in court on Wednesday.

Robert L. Cantrell, who hails from Prestonsburg, entered a guilty plea in the federal sexual abuse case in Lexington.

The Johnson County native admitted to engaging in sexual activity and receiving nude pictures from a Johnson Central High School student.

Cantrell, a Johnson Central High School Class of 2007 graduate who was was arrested in October 2014, was fired before the 2014-15 schoolyear began. The Johnson County Sheriff’s Department started its investigation in June 2014.

Following Cantrell’s arrest in October, the Johnson County Sheriff’s Department confirmed it had received a complaint in June 2014 that Cantrell had pursued an inappropriate relationship with a student.

Sentencing in the case is scheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 24 in Pikeville.

Cantrell faces up to life in prison and $250,000 in fines.
